Mentoring Program

The new Career Services office here at the University has two programs for student mentoring: the Student/Alumni Mentoring Program and the Ask an Alum Program.

A college student’s transition into the real world of business can be both exciting and daunting, and the University of Dallas has launched these programs for students to learn one-on-one from industry professionals about information and entry into the workplace, employer expectations, and leveraging their college experience to assist in accomplishing future goals.

Student/Alumni Mentoring

The Student/Alumni Mentoring program will allow alumni to mentor current UD students. The program will strengthen UD’s community of alumni professionals, build relationships between alumni, UD, and future alums, and help develop student skills and confidence.

Under this program, student mentees will have mentors in their chosen fields who share the student’s values and those of UD. Benefits to the mentee include networking (which may lead to internships or other business relationships), getting valuable career advice, and enriching mentees’ career development.

The Student/Alumni Mentor program is offered for 8-10 weeks each semester (September to November and February to April). Students are required to apply for the program, and the top candidates will be selected by Career Services.

The mentor selection process begins with Career Services identifying alumni in the DFW area across a range of industries, and who are at least ten years out of school. Career Services will invite qualifying alumni to participate. If selected, mentors will be invited to attend one of several on-campus informational/orientation meetings to receive their launch pack and learn more about their role and responsibilities as mentors.

Ask an Alum

The Ask an Alum Program is more of an introductory program to mentoring, and requires less of a time commitment. The program allows current UD students to conduct informational interviews with UD Alumni. The program will help grow student knowledge and discernment about possible careers and industries in which they may have interest.

Under this program, students may conduct an informational interview with a UD Alumnus in their chosen fields who share the student’s values and those of UD. Benefits to the student range from networking, which may lead to internships, getting valuable career advice, and raising the students’ awareness of aspects of their chosen field.

Alumni who are interested in the Ask an Alum program don't have to live in the DFW area. Career Services will invite qualifying alumni to participate, and interested candidates will submit resumes. If selected, Alumni will be sent an informational packet with guidelines about their role and responsibilities.
