Each year the International Student Association sponsors a celebration of the many cultures represented by its students. The 2012 International Week celebration kicked off on Wednesday, March 14 with a performance featuring traditional Aztec dance group Mitotiliztli Yaoyollohtli. The performance included dance, drumming, and a few brave volunteers from the audience who came forward and learned a few dance steps themselves!
Thursday's events began with the food festival. Entries this year ranged from Nepalese momos (dumplings) to Malawian cakes. According to the many students, faculty, and staff who took part in Thursdays event, the food festival was one of the biggest highlights of International Week and one of their favorite UD traditions. People came from all across campus to enjoy their lunch out on the mall, sampling foods from every corner of the globe. While everyone dined on the mall, they also enjoyed a special treat: a performance of Chinese lion dancers. Our students brought out the true spirit of International Week, celebrating the global diversity of our UD student body.
Thursday evening, GSM students were treated to an international wine and cheese festival featuring entertainment by GSM alum and Nepalese musician Rashik Aryal (MBA '11). The wines were donated by our students, and the international cheeses was provided by Central Market.
Friday's events started with a traditional Indian musical performance. Please watch the video below to view the performance. Friday's events continued with a Holi celebration: a Hindu festival shaking off the gloom of winter and celebrating the arrival of the colors of spring!
International Week concluded with an International Mass on Saturday, March 17. Our international students served as readers in the Mass and also offered special petitions in their own languages. As Father Scott O'Brien, OP, mentioned, events like the International Mass remind us of our global faith community represented at UD.
